Reclaiming Love and Trust in Your Body: A Holistic Journey After Breast Cancer

Writer: Yoga FLO with Crissy FlorioYoga FLO with Crissy Florio

For many of us who’ve walked the path of breast cancer, such as myself, the journey leaves behind more than physical scars. It can feel like your relationship with your body has been fractured, your trust shaken, and your self-love tested. But just as your body is capable of incredible healing, so is your spirit. By leaning into holistic practices, you can rediscover the profound connection with your body and soul.

Here are some quick and powerful ways to help you trust and love your body again, one step at a time:

Embrace the Power of Presence

Presence is a gift you can give yourself at any moment. Mindfulness allows you to tune into your body’s wisdom and release judgment. By showing up for yourself, and connecting to the power of the present moment you’re beginning to rebuild trust. The present moment is the only place where life truly exists. The past can bring on feelings of depression. While thinking about the future may make you feel anxious. When we are present, in the moment, appreciating life happening as it is, we feel at peace.

Start embracing the power of presence with small daily check-ins: close your eyes, take a deep breath, and place your hands over your heart. Ask yourself, What do I feel? What do I need? Maybe journal after to capture the essence.

Yoga: A Path to Healing and Wholeness

Yoga is not just about movement—it’s a practice of union between body, mind, and spirit. Gentle yoga poses can help you reconnect with your physical self while fostering compassion and strength. Consider heart-opening poses like Cobra, Bridge, or Child’s Pose to nurture your heart chakra and gently stretch your chest. Remember, your body’s pace is perfect; honor where you are each day.

*Please check with your doctor if you recently had surgery. It is best you get clearance from your doctor to start any movement or exercise.

Breathwork: Your Inner Power Source

The breath is a bridge between your physical and emotional states. Simple breathwork techniques, such as deep diaphragmatic breathing or alternate nostril breathing, can help regulate your nervous system, reduce anxiety, and bring you back into harmony with your body. Imagine each inhale bringing love and strength into your being, and each exhale releasing fear and doubt. Enjoy these breathing exercises to calm your nervous system and enhance relaxation and a sense of grounding:

  1. 4-7-8 Breath: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds. Repeat 3-5 times to calm your nervous system.

  2. Box Breathing: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold again for 4 seconds. Visualize a square as you breathe.

  3. Alternate Nostril Breathing: Use your thumb to close one nostril, inhale through the other, and then switch. Repeat for 1-2 minutes for balance and clarity.

Visualization: Seeing Beyond the Scars

Visualization is a powerful tool to help you shift your perspective and heal emotionally. Close your eyes and picture your body surrounded by a glowing, loving light. Imagine this light filling every cell, reminding you that your body is resilient, whole, and worthy of love. You might also visualize yourself thriving, radiating health and joy.

Meditation: Connecting to Your Intuition

Meditation is a sacred practice to quiet the mind and listen to the whispers of your soul. Guided meditations focused on the heart chakra can help you soften any resistance and open up to unconditional self-love. Trust that your intuition—your inner guide—is there to support you through this healing journey.

Energy Healing: Balancing Your Inner World

Practices like Reiki, acupuncture, or sound healing can help restore balance to your body’s energy systems. These modalities address emotional and energetic blockages, allowing your life force to flow freely. They’re also a beautiful reminder that you are not alone; there is a community of healers and supporters who want to see you thrive.

See Beyond the Scars

Your scars tell a story of courage, resilience, and survival. While they may feel like a reminder of pain, they are also a testament to your strength. Practice looking at yourself in the mirror with compassion. Over time, you’ll begin to see not just the scars, but the beauty of the person you’ve become.

The Power of You

Remember, healing is not about becoming someone new; it’s about returning to yourself. Your body has carried you through unimaginable challenges and continues to hold space for your spirit. Celebrate the small victories and honor the intuitive wisdom that resides within you.

Healing is a journey that integrates your mind, body, heart, and soul. By embracing all aspects of yourself, you unlock the power to heal on every level. Trust your body’s ability to regenerate, your heart’s capacity for love, your mind’s strength to adapt, and your soul’s infinite wisdom. These connections form a sacred foundation for your transformation.

Cultivate a Daily Practice

Building a daily ritual—even just 5 minutes a day—can ground you and deepen your connection with yourself. This might look like journaling, meditating, practicing yoga, or simply sitting in stillness. Consistency is key, and over time, these practices become acts of love.

Lean Into Community

You don’t have to navigate this journey alone. Connecting with fellow Pink Sisters can be a source of strength, understanding, and hope. Share your experiences, celebrate each other’s progress, and lift one another up as you walk this path together.
