Reflexology

What is Reflexology?
Foot and hand reflexology is a scientific art based on the premise that there are zones and reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all body parts. The physical act of applying specific pressures using thumb, finger and hand techniques results in stress reduction which causes physiological changes in the body.

What are the benefits of Reflexology?
As we know, too much stress in our lives can result in illness or dis-ease. One of reflexology’s primary benefits is the reduction of stress in the body thereby promoting relaxation.
Reflexology also increases circulation and restores the body to homeostasis (its natural state).

What is a Reflexology session like?
A client who comes in for a reflexology session is placed in a comfortable chair in a room that has been set up to promote relaxation. With the client sitting in a reclined position, the reflexologist begins with some simple relaxation techniques while discussing the clients’ health history. Then, finger and thumb techniques are used to apply acupressure to the feet, stimulating reflex points that correspond to the entire network of body parts. For the most part these sessions are very relaxing. However, if you are experiencing stress within your body you may experience some discomfort. It is important that both you and the reflexologist communicate how things are feeling for you. Usually tenderness is a sign that congestion exists within the body and the reflexologist can work lighter in these areas until the tenderness subsides.

How long is a Reflexology session and how often do I need one?
Typically, a session lasts about an hour and once you are on a maintenance schedule, having a reflexology session once a month is a good idea.
However, you and the reflexologist will determine the length and frequency of your sessions based on your body’s needs.
If you are dealing with a chronic problem, please give your reflexologist at least one month to work with you for every year you’ve had the condition.
